Bangalore, India: As Prakash Doddi strolled into his flat holding a half eaten box of sweets - sent to his office by their copy machine vendor as a token of appreciation for their continued business - he had no idea he would be hailed “father of the year” by his affection deprived family.

Sauntering into the living room, Doddi was surprised by the balloons and colorful streamers strewn about. He immediately thought the celebration was in his honor - just yesterday Doddi gallantly saved his boss from utter humiliation by claiming the senior’s noxious flatulence as his own during a client meeting. Doddi had been promoted to Assistant Secretary to the Junior Vice President of Quality Assurance as a result.

Instead his daughter Shreeya screamed with delight upon seeing the box and yelled “DADDY! DADDY! I KNEW YOU’D REMEMBER MY BIRTHDAY!”

Doddi recovered quickly, announcing much too loudly, “Of course I did, my lovely! How could I forget?”

A giddy Shreeya opened the box to reveal 1 1/2 slightly stale chocolate cupcakes, 2 ludoos, a slightly nibbled shortbread cookie and a half emptied bottled of Johnny Walker.

Doddi grabbed the bottle quickly, explaining, “Did you know it is tradition for parents to have a drink of Scotch when their child turns 10?”

To which his now deeply suspicious wife, Hema, replied, “She’s 12, Prakash. Shreeya is 12.”

Nevertheless, Doddi helped himself to a generous pour and made a toast, “To Shreeya - my favorite daughter!”

Kavya, Doddi’s second daughter, promptly burst into tears.
